  • Minimizing Use of Restraints [PSW/Family Caregivers]

    Photo of bed restraintsThe course on “Minimizing the use of Restraints” will introduce you to the review relevant legislation and key aspects of a typical agency ‘restraint’ policy. You will find information on the common risk factors associated with restraint use and some approaches to prevention and preventative measures that can be used.

    There are necessary requirements that must be met before a restraint can be used, whether the restraint is physical, chemical or environmental that is detailed within the lessons. Safe use, how to explain restraints to families, requirements for obtaining consent and lastly how you should   document decisions and interventions. You will explore approaches to prevention and put your ideas into action using a case study and a variety of reflections.

    PLEASE NOTE: These courses are open to the public with no registration required.  However, if you wish to access a Course Completion Certificate for a course, you must be enrolled as a student.  To do so please contact info@sageducation.ca.

    This simple quiz provides a means of measuring your understanding of the topic before you start this course. When compared with the post-assessment quiz, the data we collect helps us measure the effectiveness of our course design and content as well as providing helpful feedback for the learner.

    In some cases these pre and post course assessments will be required by your employer as part of a quality improvement initiative and/or as indicators of understanding of site-based required educational activities.

    This lesson covers inappropriate rationale for restraining and reviews the elements required before restraints can be used such as emergency conditions. 

  • PSW/Family Caregivers - Restraints > Lesson 2: Preventing Restraint Use

    Photo of a wheelchairOften the perceived requirement for restraint is misguided and could be avoid by using other strategies.  This lesson provides guidance on how to recognize and respond to risk factors that may lead to the use of restraints and explores other options to preserve the safety of the person and those in their environment, which might be engaged instead of using restraints.

  • PSW/Family Caregivers - Restraints > Lesson 3: Making a Decision

    Photo of elderly woman with caregiver and family memberIn lesson 3 you will have established that the use of restraints is appropriate in order to provide the best care for the person.  This lesson provides information on the different types of restraints, their safe use and how to explain the use of restraints the person's friends and family.

    You will reflect about what you would say to families by explaining why restraints may be necessary in preparation for obtaining consent. Additionally there is information in this lesson to help you care for a person if restraint use if refused by them or their family.

  • PSW/Family Caregivers- Restraints > Lesson 4: Using Restraints

    photo of hand filling out formThe last lesson of this course stresses the importance of approaching the use of restraints collaboratively and ensuring that there is clear communication as to why, when and how the application of restraints was decided. 

    You will also explore different samples of restraint use documentation.  You will understand the importance of what you should document in the progress notes and care plan. You are encouraged to reflect on the restraint policies within your own working environment as you follow the lesson material.
